How to Opt Out of Yellow Pages and Other Directories

I just added how to opt out of yellow pages and other directories as a a new resource to Michele Corey Recommends under - Miscellaneous Things You May Want to Know.

My husband refuses to even let the directories come up the steps.  They go immediately to the recycling bin.  And the process always created a tad bit of frustration.    We had already opted out of direct mail - although if you buy or refinance a new home you end up on some new lists that continue to bombard you (from my experience).

My neighbor sent us the link to opt out and we were ecstatic.  Then I read a post with growing comments on LinkedIn about getting rid of directories.  I have to admit that some of the people were amusing  but all had the same frustration.  And most didn’t know you CAN out out, save some frustration and perhaps even a tree or two.

To opt out go to: http:///www.yellowpagesoptout.com It will forward you to a site that asks for your zip code so that it can pull up all of the directories your area receives.  You must then manually opt out of each list.   It will take 3 to 15 minutes depending upon how many directories you receive.

Also, if you live in a larger city and are opting out of the Yellow Pages you may need to look for “greater city name” versus “your city name” - in other words it takes some thinking to figure it out.

OK, I feel like I did my good deed for the day - and already received an “cool” email from my neighbor.  Have a resource you want to share? Post a comment.

Here are a few of my responses via email…

Thanks, Michele, for this - my condominium mates appreciated this as about 50 directories were just dropped off at our front door! Very best, Connie Miller

one word - “COOL!” from a neighbor
